When Should You Plant Daffodils

On July 28, 2019 by Dave Lane

Everyone knows that daffodils are one of the most beautiful flowers that exist. It’s clear to see why this is the case as their bright yellow to white petals brightens up your mood instantly. As well, their cone-shaped funnels attract insects such as butterflies and bees who are important pollinators that help your garden bloom into a gorgeous addition to your home. Also, daffodils are easy to grow if done properly. One aspect of planting daffodils for them to grow properly is to plant the bulbs of this flower at the right time. So, if you want to add the beloved daffodil to your garden, the most important question that you should ask is when should you plant daffodils?

The simple conclusion for this statement is that you should plant daffodils in the fall. To be more precise, this means anywhere from early September to early November. However, there are many reasons to why this is the case and it is important for every gardener out there to know why.

When Daffodils Bloom

First off, we must acknowledge the time in which a daffodil is expected to bloom. Daffodils are early spring blooming flowers which means that they are one of the first flowers to appear when spring comes into season. The early spring months that daffodils are expected to bloom begins in late March and ends around early June. This, however also depends on the region where you live and, therefore, where you plant your daffodils.

Aspects of growing regions that will affect your daffodils expected time to bloom include the amount of sun that is received, the amount of rain that falls, the extent of the previous winter season such as how long it lasted and how cold it got and so on. To have your daffodils blooming in time, you must plant them at least in the fall before the desired spring season. This is because daffodils need to establish a firm root system before they can bloom successfully. This root system is essential as daffodil bulbs need to soak up enough nutrients from the soil to gain the energy to grow later when spring comes around. Also, a daffodil bulb will need these nutrients to develop the right sized petals, stem and leaves when it fully blooms as well.

Why Plant in the Fall

Another reason why you must plant daffodils in the fall is that these flower bulbs need to be in the ground before the last frost hits. This is because when the first frost happens, the soil in your garden will become too frozen and you will not be able to dig a hole deep enough to insert your daffodil bulbs. Follow this tip and you will be sure to have daffodils in the spring!
